Romeeeeeo! (Monday, August 10, 2009)
This blog is 367 days old now :) just realised. Singapore is 44 years old now. Saw the NDP on television yesterday; gave up before the fireworks and went back to computer. Oh well, the story of our forefathers, 5 Defences, cheesy acting, 4 races in harmony and mediocre National Day songs are all a basic prequisite of NDP. I understand that the very long marching segment is important and that's just keeping tradition; if anything, that segment was more interesting than watching "wushu warriors" dance around holding sticks with boxes on their heads. And THAT, somehow symbolises our civil defence, woo! I also didn't like that they tried to incorporate popular culture into the parade. That chapter about Singapore's developing years had iconic music from the retro years- none were produced by Singapore, so how do those songs have any significance to Singapore's development, anyway? Gloria Gaynor, Madonna and the Spice Girls supposedly have enough influence on the island to earn a mention in NDP. Well, I guess they have as much influence on us as they have on Ulaan Baatar or something. They just try to turn NDP into some kind of great, cool party, "the nation's biggest party". Why? We don't need disco lights; we've got a vibrant nightclub scene already you know. Anyway, the Straits Times today had what, 10 pages on NDP saying how the local references won the hearts of the public. Yes, Singlish/Nyonya fever are distinctly Singaporean; yet the music all came from America and Britain. Local indeed. And because I have paranoid and sensitive parents that even disapprove of BIMBO! formula, I shall emphasise that this little paragraph about the failure of NDP does not imply that I'm an unpatriotic little ingrate. I love Singapore very much for its safety, education system, stability and very very good gahmen. Just that I think that NDP's cheese production level seriously needs to decrease. (Oh I do think I'm ungrateful and critical, after reading how peers thought NDP was great. But that isn't going to change anything.) The homework mood ironically struck me yesterday. Block tests are over, yet I am doing math. I DID A HOT QUESTION WHOOOOOOOOOOOO. Today we went to Mt. Faber because we had complimentary/free tickets for the cable car ride. Tomorrow there's school and possibly The Return of the Block Tests, maybe Chinese and Math. I predict we've got to wait about around 2 months before LA paper comes back. Prove me wrong, dear LA department. |
