Some people come dressed for a party (like that) (Monday, September 28, 2009)
Ris Low has done it again. After being attacked relentlessly for her poor grasp of English, it has been revealed that our Miss Singapore World is guilty of credit card fraud. If Singaporeans are against her participation of the Miss World contest just because she can’t speak English well, what would we say when we find out she’s a criminal offender? I just don’t think she’s a good enough representation of Singapore with her past offences and her present diction. Some people have said that Singaporeans should not be ashamed of her because this is what our people sound like. English may not be the primary language of Ris Low and she may be uncomfortable speaking the language, resulting in such an abysmal interview. While that must be comforting and encouraging to hear, there are areas to be questioned on. Why can’t she speak English fluently? Is she from a foreign country? Has she been deprived from proper education? English is the primary language of Singapore and everyone should be able to speak English at a proper and understandable level. Furthermore, I should think the Miss World question-and-answer segments are conducted in English; I doubt there will be any translators there to help her express her intricate insights and elaborate explanations. If Singapore is going to pride itself on being a bilingual country, are we going to send someone who struggles to give a coherent and comprehensible answer on her fashion sense and style? (Seriously, I bet even Panthera Leo could aptly describe her daily outfits in an acceptable manner, given her incredibly detailed and colourful outfits) Anyway as I said, we hear people talking like she does on trains, at the bus stop and what not. Yes, we don’t speak perfect English all the time, but I believe that many of us can speak Standard English without much difficulty, given a formal situation like an interview. If Ris Low speaks like that in an interview, god knows what she’s like when talking to her friends and family. I’m slamming her for her dreadful English (though I’m no LA teacher! haha) though I think the real issue on why Singaporeans hate her so is because of her criminal offences. However, criminal offences are not fun to write about. On to the real post! LA in the morning was just annotating the 3 passages and attempting the questions, something I had already done at home (or at least one-third of). Science was really bad because I can’t remember the ammonia and acids and bases and hydrogen topics. Art was painting; Chinese was reading; CCT was talking about Malacca trip. The EOY mood is really setting in; it is stealthily creeping up on us and by the time the truth dawns on us and realization sets in, there aren’t any papers left to take, albeit our strong desire to do it all over again. I hope that wasn’t grammatically incorrect. Disregarding the slight grandiloquent and aureate (which are in every sense, bombastic words themselves as well) words above, the EOYs are really approaching and I haven’t started mugging. An ominous sign; this spells trouble. Trouble moves like storm clouds, or rather, cumulonimbus clouds. (I will never get the spelling of this cloud wrong for Geography papers, or I will quite literally devote myself to the pursuit of Cirrus clouds) No, that didn’t make such sense. Anyway, tomorrow is Home-Learning Day, declared by the school and greatly appreciated by us. I’m going do Science I think, but usually I study what I fancy first or whenever the mood strikes me. Quite sadly and regretfully, the math mood has yet to strike me. I wonder when it ever will. |
