Yes! I see something. (Friday, September 25, 2009)
Hello. EOYs are coming, sadly, and I don’t quite wish to relive the mathematical Cumulonimbus clouds experience from last year. The mushroom/anvil-shaped clouds are approaching, fast but surely. They may leave behind a trail of massive destruction in their wake, rendering us helpless and destitute. Yet, they may be followed by nice and light Cirrus clouds, providing us with endless sunshine and happiness. Boo.

On a lighter note, I really like the Ugly Dolls franchise. I bought an Ugly Doll journal for Hipchip Pomunk’s birthday. The Ugly Dolls are simply adorable, they’re not ugly. Their website is super cute also! http://www.uglydolls.com/

Yesterday was the drama presentation; our group did okay I think. Lighting was fine because Yuxin volunteered to do it for us and the sound (Jane I think) was okay too, albeit being slightly slow. So yay drama is over and we were not selected. Congratulations to 206A (2) for being our DramaFest representatives.

We also got back ICAS English yesterday and music project. Wow, the music project was really an unexpectedly good score but Gennie did all the work, seriously. I did practically nothing. ICAS English was fine; normal.

Today we had a failed PCCG lesson in the library because the websites refused to send us emails to re-activate some account which is just plain stupid.

Math was more Time Trials and finally finished in the time limit, although I skipped one or two questions. Hey but that’s the norm for me. Skipping questions is normal. Considered a sure sign of a screw-up by the average student, I find skipping questions acceptable and it is only if I skip more than 2-3 when I feel slightly worried.

PE was just more softball. Science was spent in the classroom without a teacher but I didn’t go the Biology worksheets provided because I wanted to save it. So I did Drama journal. For LA, we had the limited edition tour today because of the glitch in the school special room booking system. Mrs Heng booked the Board Room but it didn’t show on the list. So we headed to the library but all rooms were full. Trooped back to class and that marked the end of the limited edition tour. Chinese was some reading which I actually enjoyed but it left me feeling slightly dazed, somewhat like the feeling after Math remedial.

Mrs Heng encourages us to read some expository/argumentative writing for EOY preparation. I don’t want to read, I want to write. So my topic for today is the Malaysian attempt at claiming copyright for Straits delicacies, such as Hainanese Chicken Rice, laksa, ba kut teh and so on.

Firstly, I’m not sure if Dr. Ng Yen Yen understands what the meaning behind the name Hainanese chicken rice is. Um, HAINANESE chicken rice originated from Hainan Island. Although their versions may be slightly different, it’s origin is, still, from the island, hence, the name. Chicken Rice is also commonly associated with Singapore. Ba Kut Teh is a CHINESE herb soup introduced by CHINESE workers to Malaya/Singapore/Straits area. So, competing with China now, are we? China, one of the world’s longest civilizations, is actually being challenged for its food culture. Are we being serious here? Sure, laksa has Peranakan influences; nasi lemak is definitely Malay but staking a claim on Chinese food is like saying that sushi was from Brazil and roti came from Canada. I mean, seriously.

Secondly, how are Singapore and Malaysia supposed to live in peace and harmony when even food, has to be copyrighted, claimed, and “hijacked”? We basically share the same culture anyway, so why can’t we let our food be “free”? No one is saying that Malaysian food is bad and that all tourists should only come to Singapore for good food. Our food is relatively regional and has roots from China, Indonesia AND Malaysia etc. We share our food. That’s it. The whole argument here is getting stupid so I will end here.

Mugging will commence. Soon.
